washington electric Washington Electric Cooperative was formed in 1940 by Ohio rural residents. At the time a majority of the rural areas of southeastern Ohio were without electric service. The first Washington Electric lines were energized in October of 1940 with service provided to those paying a $5 membership to the cooperative. Today Washington Electric is a Touchstone Energy Cooperative headquartered in Marietta. It serves over 10,000 accounts, and nearly 85% are residential and farm members. Washington Electric has 28 employees, serving 6 Southeastern Ohio Counties including Washington, Noble, Monroe, Athens, Morgan, and Guernsey. The cooperative maintains over 1680 miles of distribution line spanning along rolling hills with beautiful wooded areas, including the northern portion of Wayne National Forest. Recently the cooperative completed construction
of a new $1million substation in east central Noble County (near Caldwell).
This substation will provide power to eastern and southeastern Noble County.
In addition to the new substation, Washington Electric has made substantial
improvements to right-of-way and additional investments in utility plants.
These investments have resulted in an average outage per consumer of 1.3
hours. This ranks Washington Electric among the lowest consumer outage
hours in the state.
