american berry cooperative

American Berry Cooperative (ABC) was founded in 1998 to assist with the development and expansion of the berry industry in Ohio. Their mission is to “expand the Midwestern berry industry while improving member profitability, consumer enjoyment and public health.” ABC has fourteen members representing over 100 acres of berries in Ohio. The cooperative does not have any full-time paid employees.

Currently, ABC members are purchasing supplies in bulk and performing some collaborative research and marketing efforts. Opportunities are being considered for equipment sharing/leasing, custom harvesting and marketing activities to be organized within the cooperative. Marketing locally produced and labeled berry products with the visual and taste attributes consumers demand and the dependability of supply required by wholesale and retail buyers, is a goal of the cooperative’s marketing program. ABC mainly serves as a networking organization, but it aims to be a marketing co-op to market their berry products and conduct product development as a group. The cooperative is still working to attract members from the 200 berry producers in Ohio and effectively define the benefits they can provide to their membership.
